چکیده

DEFINING SUCCESS I asked faculty to identify students who had the most and least positive impact on their labs and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), based on student performance during their time in graduate school. I thought it was best to compare students when they are all at the same stage in their careers. Furthermore, many of these students have not yet completed their graduate or postgraduate training. I strongly agree that we should be training our students for diverse careers (not just academia), but importantly, my study was based on graduate performance not on postgraduate outcome. A typical highest-ranked student independently initiated a new area of research for the lab/field and contributed to the success of others at UCSF through collaborations, sharing ideas and reagents, and so on. A typical lowest-ranked student significantly struggled during his or her time in graduate school, possibly due to a lack of appetite and/or aptitude for scientific research. I agree that there are many possible metrics for success, but it would be hard to argue that you would not want to enrich for the first set of students at the expense of the latter.

P 126: The Relationship between Bell`s Palsy and Diabetes

Bell`s palsy is explained as a sudden paralysis/paresis of all muscle groups on one side of the face due to inflammation of facial nerve, The frequency of Bell palsy in diabetic patients is a matter of controversy. There are some reports that refer to Bell`s palsy as occurring more commonly in patients with diabetes, or even prediabetes. AmosD, Korczyn in his studies had shown that a high frequ...

Assesment of different DNA extraction methods in medicinal plants

Medicinal plants have high importance in medicine and pharmacogonosy because of their secondary metabolites. Essential oils, antioxidants and flavonoids are the major compounds of many medicinal plants. These compounds especially antioxidants can increase oxidation of DNA in response to wounds. Nowadays, progresses in biotechnology such as molecular markers were used for phylogenetic relationsh...

Draft genome sequences of two Campylobacter jejuni clinical isolates, NW and D2600.

The Campylobacter jejuni human clinical isolates NW and D2600 colonized C57BL/6 interleukin-10-deficient (IL-10(-/-)) mice without inducing a robust inflammatory response (J. A. Bell et al., BMC Microbiol. 9:57, 2009). We announce draft genome sequences of NW and D2600 to facilitate comparisons with strains that induce gastrointestinal inflammation in this mouse model.

Geospatial Modeling Approach for Prediction of Potential Sav Habitat Increase with Restoration Efforts

The decline in coastal environmental quality is a major global conservation problem (Bell et al. 1993; Short et al. 2001). Efforts to restore coastal environmental quality have been rapidly increasing. Restoration success is not simple to measure, especially when records on the original habitat condition are absent or scarce (Short et al. 2001). Ecological indicators and restoration goals need ...
